Bournemouth’s Lewis Cook and Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham named in England Under-21 squad for the Toulon Tournament

Lewis Cook and Tammy Abraham have been included in the England Under-21 squad for the upcoming Toulon Tournament.

Chelsea striker Abraham, who spent this season on loan at Swansea City, and Bournemouth midfielder Cook have both been capped at senior level.

Cook, 21, is also on the standby list for Gareth Southgate’s 2018 World Cup squad.

Tottenham defender Kyle Walker-Peters is also in the 20-man group heading to France, along with Everton duo Jonjoe Kenny and Tom Davies.

Leeds’ Tom Pearce has been handed a first call-up at any England level while Newcastle’s Adam Armstrong and Arsenal’s Edward Nketiah are also selected for the first time at Under-21 level.

Rules mean Boothroyd can only select players born in 1997 and afterwards so he is without Angus Gunn, Demarai Gray, James Maddison and Jack Harrison.

Liverpool’s run to the Champions League final – they face Real Madrid the day of England’s opener – also means he cannot select Dominic Solanke.

Boothroyd added: “It gives me the opportunity to look at the younger ones. We have a World Cup so that means there will be one or two who have done well for me who have gone into the senior team.

“Our depth will be stretched this time but it’s good and I’m quite excited about that because although we have done very well so far we haven’t qualified (for Euro 2019) yet.

“We have put ourselves in a really good position but this tournament is about learning one or two things about players who we might not necessarily know too much about.”

England Under-21 squad for the Toulon Tournament: Ramsdale (Bournemouth) Woodman (Newcastle), Clarke-Salter (Chelsea), Dasilva (Chelsea), Fry (Middlesbrough), Kenny (Everton), Konsa (Charlton), Pearce (United), Tomori (Chelsea), Walker-Peters (Tottenham), Barnes (Leicester), Cook (Bournemouth), Davies (Everton), Dowell (Everton), Ejaria (Liverpool), Maitland-Niles (Arsenal), Abraham (Chelsea), Armstrong (Newcastle), Nketiah (Arsenal), Nmecha (Manchester City)
