Leeds United manager news: Marcelo Bielsa target to replace Paul Heckingbottom at Elland Road

Bielsa has been out of work since leaving Lille in December

Leeds United are considering a shock approach for Marcelo Bielsa to replace Paul Heckingbottom as their manager.

Bielsa, the former Argentina boss, is currently out of work having left Lille of France in December, following an almost month-long suspension.

And ESPN say Leeds are ready to make an ambitious move for the 62-year-old.

Highly regarded in the game, Bielsa managed Argentina for six years between 1998 and 2004, and he’s also enjoyed spells with Chile and Athletic Club of Bilbao, as well as Velez Sarsfield and Newell’s Old Boys in his homeland.

Should Leeds’ approach be successful, Bielsa will replace the under-pressure Heckingbottom.

Heckingbottom was only hired by the Elland Road club in February following the sacking of Thomas Christiansen, but he failed to turn around their poor form and Leeds ended the Championship season in 13th.

Reports have surfaced in recent weeks suggesting Heckingbottom could be dismissed prior to pre-season, and Bielsa would be a shock replacement for the 40-year-old former Barnsley boss.
