Joe Gomez will miss Liverpool’s Champions League final against Real Madrid
The 20-year-old picked up the injury while on international duty in March, but aggravated the problem during the club’s recent Premier League games against West Brom and Stoke; his last appearance for the side.
Liverpool Echo journalist James Pearce explained on Twitter that the player had faced the Potters with a swollen ankle.
He has now undergone surgery meaning he will miss the final on 26 May in Kiev. There is also a danger he will miss out on a place in England’s World Cup squad, having appeared to have played himself into Gareth Southgate’s team for Russia 2018.
Southgate has until 4 June to name his final 23-man squad, while Liverpool must do without Gomez for their final game of the season, against Brighton on 13 May, where they need to win to guarantee Champions League football next season.
