Raphael Varane snubbed a move to Manchester United back in 2011 because Jose Mourinho played a ‘card of seduction’ which lured him to Real Madrid.

The France international, now considered one of the best central defenders in world football, nearly joined United seven years ago while he was still at Lens.

However he instead opted to join Madrid and he has since played 141 times in La Liga and also won the Champions League four times.

Now his former boss Jean-Guy Wallemme has revealed why the defender decided against a move to Old Trafford – and the current United manager Mourinho was pivotal.

Wallemme told SFR Sport: “The choice he made to go to Real Madrid was the right one.

Zinedine Zidane, who was not yet a manager at the time, played an important role because the player was set to, initially, go to Manchester United.

Sir Alex Ferguson really wanted him.

“But Mourinho also had his card of seduction to play by telling Raphael that he was the third defender in the hierarchy.”
