There are just 59 days to go until the 2018 World Cup begins and talkSPORT.com is counting them down by looking at the competition’s most wonderful players.
This list, featuring Pele, Diego Maradona and Zinedine Zidane, looks at the greatest moments from the most iconic footballers – from great goal scorers and majestic defenders to sensational scoundrels and those who just didn’t know the rules.
59) Gianluigi Buffon: Italy, goalkeeper 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2014)
A a handsome devil who also happens to be one of the greatest keepers of all time. Buffon captained Italy at what was his fifth World Cup in 2014 – but he is most revered for the part he played in their championship-winning team of 2006. In Germany he conceded only two goals all tournament, though he didn’t save one penalty in the victorious final shoot-out against France. Loser. For some reason there was a lot of tears shed when Buffon and Italy failed to reach the 2018 editition when they simply weren’t good enough.
