Transfer report: Leicester beat Tottenham to signing of Porto defender Ricardo Pereira with £17.5m fee agreed

Ricardo Pereira is set to join Leicester City this summer, according to reports in Portugal

Leicester City have beaten Tottenham Hotspur by agreeing a deal to sign Porto defender Ricardo Pereira this summer.

Spurs tried and failed to land the 24-year-old Portugal international last summer as a replacement for Manchester City-bound Kyle Walker.

They instead signed Serge Aurier from Paris Saint-Germain, but he has endured an erratic first season in north London and it has been claim the club had renewed their interest in Pereira ahead of the new transfer window.

However, reports from the player’s homeland suggest Leicester City have won the race to sign him from Porto.

According to Portuguese sports newspaper A Bola, Leicester have agreed a €20million [£17.5 million] fee for the right-back, with a further €5m [£4.3m] in add-ons.

The report also claims Foxes manager Claude Puel played a big role in convincing the Portugal international – who was called up to their World Cup squad on Friday – to join the 2016 Premier League champions.

Puel coached the defender during his time in charge at French club Nice and the 24-year-old is said to be keen to be reunited with his former manager.

The Leicester manager is desperate to add to strengthen his defensive options this summer, with Danny Simpson the club’s only recognised right-back.
