Trent Alexander-Arnold ‘blown away’ by how relaxed the England World Cup experience has been

Trent Alexander-Arnold admits his time in Russia with the England squad has been surprisingly relaxing so far.

The 19-year-old is completely new to the international game, without a single cap to his name prior to being selected.

Upon finding himself on the plane for a World Cup, the Liverpool full-back concedes he had no idea what to expect.

In an exclusive interview with talkSPORT, he said: “It’s a lot more relaxed and together than I thought it would be as an England squad.

“You don’t spend too much time together [with your clubs] but since I’ve come in the team is one, it’s a whole.

“Everyone’s got the same aims, the same goals and everyone’s bought into the idea of wanting success as a team.

“Coming into it I didn’t expect us to have such a good team morale, but I’ve been blown away. All the players have helped me become part of the team.”

The England hotel in Repino is not the most upmarket selection compared to previous tournaments, but it is quiet and there are plenty of ways for the players to switch off.

Alexander-Arnold, who spoke with real maturity, stressed the importance of down-time in what he knows can be a stressful environment.

He added: “We have a lot of time to just relax and there’s a lot of things to do within the hotel. You can chill by yourself, watch films or whatever.

“There’s lounge areas where you can just talk. The staff have done an excellent job.”

That said, the youngster is looking forward to football above all else, and wishes the Three Lions’ opener against Tunisia would come sooner.

He continued: “As soon as the games get up and running, that’s when a tournament properly kicks in.

“It’s a bit of a waiting game with us being one of the last teams to play.

“We’re all very excited for that game to come around on Monday.”
